YANGON, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar has kicked off a sports festival for basic education students for the academic year 2022-2023 in the capital city of Nay Pyi Taw, the state-run media reported on Wednesday.
Speaking at the opening ceremony on Tuesday, Union Minister for Education Nyunt Pe urged the participating student-athletes to try hard to become national athletes, saying that achievements in international competitions can express the nation's unity, dignity and patriotism.
The ministry will select student-athletes from the festival for the upcoming ASEAN School Games, he added.
The sports festival, which will run until January 27, features competitions of football, volleyball, athletics, and sepak takraw for both male and female students. ■
