COPENHAGEN, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- At an international ceremony on Tuesday, Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, officially took on the title of UNESCO World Capital of Architecture 2023 on the recommendation of the International Union of Architects (UIA).
The ceremony at City Hall was opened by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik, patron of the World Capital of Architecture year. Throughout 2023, Copenhagen is expected to host over 300 architecture-related events and exhibitions on the overarching theme of "Sustainable Futures -- Leave No One Behind."
One of the highlights will be the UIA World Congress of Architects 2023 in July, where more than 10,000 professionals are expected to participate. The event will be hosted by Bella Center Copenhagen.
The city's Lord Mayor, Sophie Andersen, said she considered it a unique opportunity to showcase Danish solutions in architecture, urban development and sustainability, as well as an important occasion for dialogue on the future development of the capital.
"If Copenhagen is to continue to be among the world's best cities, we must handle the great challenges of the time together, such as climate change, rising water levels, the lack of housing," said Andersen.
Every three years, the city designated as the World Capital of Architecture is transformed into an international forum for discussions on contemporary issues in urban design and architecture. Copenhagen takes the torch of World Capital of Architecture from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. ■
