JERUSALEM, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Three ancient stone anchors that date back to more than 4,100 years were discovered in the Mediterranean Sea, the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) said Monday evening.
The anchors were found near the shores of the northern Israeli city of Haifa by swimmers, who saw three stones with holes that did not appear to have been naturally created, the IAA said.
The shape of the stones is triangular, and a large biconical hole was carved on both sides of each one.
An examination by archaeologists revealed that the stones were used during the late Bronze Age for mooring boats and stopping them from drifting.
The experts estimated that the anchors were also used in later periods. ■
