BEIJING, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Beijing received its first snowfall of the winter season on Thursday, 40 days later than the average from 1991 to 2020, according to the Beijing Meteorological Service.
As of 5 p.m. Thursday, snowfall was observed at 16 out of 20 manned observation stations in the city.
Lei Lei, the chief forecaster at the service, noted that severe cold air is affecting the city, causing rain, snow, strong winds, and a drop in temperature between Thursday and Saturday.
The service issued a blue alert for the cold wave and a yellow alert for icy roads on Thursday. China has a four-tier, color-coded weather warning system, with red representing the most severe weather, followed by orange, yellow, and blue.
The forecast predicts that the cold weather will continue until Sunday, with the lowest temperature to drop by more than 8 degrees Celsius. Enditem
