GENEVA, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Mikaela Shiffrin had to wait for a potential record victory as the Zagreb slalom was cancelled due to weather conditions, the International Skiing Federation (FIS) confirmed on Thursday.

"Due to high temperatures and wind, today's race in Zagreb was cancelled," FIS announced on Thursday.

Unusually warm weather has forced the cancellation of a number of winter sports events and Wednesday's race of the double-header saw skiers struggle due to the poor condition of the track.

Shiffrin, who won Wednesday's race for her 81st World Cup victory, is only one win away from the all-time women's World Cup record, currently held by fellow American Lindsey Vonn. Sweden legend Ingemar Stenmark leads the way for all skiers with 86 wins.

Shiffrin's next chance to break the record will come this weekend, with two giant slalom races in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia.
