RAMALLAH, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- A Palestinian teen was killed on Tuesday during clashes with Israeli soldiers near the Dheisha refugee camp close to the southern West Bank city of Bethlehem, Palestinian medics and eyewitnesses said.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health said in a statement that 15-year-old Adam Ayyad, a refugee camp resident, died in the hospital after he was shot in the chest by Israeli soldiers.

Clashes broke out between dozens of Palestinian demonstrators and Israeli soldiers in the refugee camp on Tuesday morning, during which Ayyad was critically wounded, Palestinian eyewitnesses and local sources said.

There has been no comment from the Israeli authorities on the incident. However, several Palestinian factions declared a day of rage and mourning in the city of Bethlehem in protest against the killing of the boy.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry said in a press statement that the killing of Ayyad "is an extension of the series of extrajudicial killings and an inseparable part of the Israeli targeting of Palestinian children."

Ayyad's death raised the number of Palestinians killed by the Israeli army in the West Bank to three since the beginning of 2023.
