SEOUL, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's global automotive sales grew in single digits last year due to the moderated supply disruption of semiconductors used to make vehicles, industry data showed on Tuesday.
The number of cars, sold globally by five local automakers including Hyundai, Kia, GM Korea, Renault Samsung and Ssangyong, was 7,396,674 in 2022, up 4.0 percent from the previous year.
Car sales in the domestic market dropped 3.1 percent to 1,388,476 units, but auto sales outside South Korea gained 5.6 percent to 6,008,198 units.
Global automotive sales by the country's top carmaker Hyundai Motor totaled 3,944,579 vehicles in 2022.
Hyundai's auto sales at home shrank 5.2 percent to 688,884 units, but its overseas sales rose 2.9 percent to 3,255,695 units.
Kia Motors, affiliated with Hyundai, globally sold 2,903,619 units in 2022, up 4.6 percent from the prior year. Kia's local and overseas car sales amounted to 541,068 units and 2,362,551 units respectively.
The number of global car sales by GM Korea, Renault Samsung and Ssangyong Motor expanded in double figures to 264,875 units, 169,641 units and 113,960 units each on solid export. ■
