HUZHOU, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- The crested ibis is an endangered species. They used to be widely distributed across East Asia and Russia's Siberia. Now at the Xiazhu Lake Crested Ibis breeding base in Deqing County, east China's Zhejiang Province, a rewilding project of the endangered bird is going on.
Xiazhu Lake Crested Ibis Breeding Base is one of the largest of its kind in China. The crested ibises currently in training will be released in another place in the near future.
Since the introduction of 10 crested ibises from Shaanxi in 2008, the Xiazhu Lake Crested Ibis Breeding Base has accumulated expertise in the breeding and rewilding of the birds.
Thanks to the 14-year efforts, the population of crested ibis in Deqing County has reached 669, including 287 wild. It is now the third-largest crested ibis group in China.
