BERLIN, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- A giant aquarium in the German capital containing 1,000 cubic meters of water and 1,500 fish burst on Friday, slightly injuring two people with glass fragments, according to the local authorities.

The wave of water flooded and caused "serious damage" to the complex that also houses a hotel, Berlin's fire department said on Twitter. Parts of the building's facade were blown into the street.

There were "no signs of a crime," the police said on Twitter. The AquaDom, a popular tourist attraction, is according to its website the world's largest free-standing cylindrical aquarium. It was extensively modernized in 2020.

"Investigations into the matter are of course not yet complete, but initial indications point to material fatigue," Berlin Senator Iris Spranger told the German Press Agency (dpa).

Around 200 firefighters and police officers have been on the scene since early Friday.
