Vehicle orders surge 16 pct at Thailand motor expo 2022

BANGKOK, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Vehicle orders at the Thailand International Motor Expo 2022 rose 16 percent from last year's expo in a boost to the Southeast Asian country's auto industry, according to the organizer.

This year's expo, which was held in the Thai capital of Bangkok till Monday, saw vehicle orders surge 16 percent from last year to more than 42,700 units, generating over 51 billion baht (about 1.48 billion U.S. dollars) in revenue for the auto industry, according to Kwanchai Paphatphong, the organizing chairman.

The 13-day event attracted a total of over 1.33 million visitors, Kwanchai said.

Toyota and Honda topped the chart with 6,064 and 3,252 orders, respectively, followed by Chinese leading new energy vehicle manufacturer BYD, which recorded unprecedented orders of 2,714 units during its first presence at the expo since its launch of the ATTO 3, its first passenger car model for the Thai market. BYD also led the sales chart for electric vehicles, followed by MG and NETA.

In terms of car types, sport utility vehicles (SUVs) were the most popular, accounting for 53.9 percent of the total orders, followed by sedans and pickup trucks, which account for 30.3 percent and 11.8 percent of the total, respectively, Kwanchai said.
