NAGAON, India, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- A wild elephant succumbed to injuries after a fight with another elephant in Nagaon, India, according to forest officials.

A veterinarian team checked the carcass of the elephant, while villagers were so sad that they prayed and offered flowers to the dead animal before a proper burial.

Over 80 percent of Indians are Hindus, to whom the elephant is a sacred animal. It is the living incarnation of one of their most important gods, Ganesh, an elephant-headed deity who rides atop a tiny mouse.
