DOHA, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Tunisia striker Wahbi Khazri has confirmed that he is retiring from international football.
The 31-year-old, who plays for French Ligue 1 side Montpellier, leaves the international game after scoring 25 goals in 74 appearances for his country, with the last of those coming in his side's historic 1-0 win against France on Wednesday.
Although the win wasn't enough to qualify Tunisia for the last 16 due to Australia's victory over Denmark, it means they go home with heads held high after also drawing with Denmark in the tournament.
"In a meeting that included all the players and the technical and administrative staff, I told everyone that this moment is appropriate, and I thanked everyone and wished them success," he said on BeIN Sports' French language service, adding that he was optimistic young players could come through for Tunisia.
"I am proud of what I gave my country over the past years, and I believe that the future for this generation is bright."
"To beat France, to score and be decisive, that is beautiful," he concluded. ■
