JAKARTA, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- According to local officials, the death toll from a strong earthquake hitting west Indonesia rose to 271 on Wednesday with 40 others still missing.
Suharyanto, head of Indonesia's National Agency for Disaster Management, said the quake forced more than 61,000 people to flee home in the district as it destroyed houses and infrastructure facilities.
The official said a total of 14 evacuation centers have been set up, where necessities of the evacuees are provided.
A 5.6-magnitude earthquake rocked Indonesia's West Java on Monday, with the epicenter located southwest of the district of Cianjur. Some 171 aftershocks have occurred until Wednesday.
