DAMASCUS, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Syria and Belarus signed multiple cooperation agreements here on Wednesday and agreed to enhance cooperation in the face of mutual challenges, such as unilateral economic sanctions, the Syrian cabinet said in a press release.

Earlier in the day, Syrian Prime Minister Hussein Arnous met with his visiting Belarusian counterpart Roman Golovchenko in Damascus, during which they discussed economic ties, including strengthening trade and cooperation in the fields of energy, transport, education and culture, as well as the contribution of Belarusian businesses to Syria's reconstruction.

The two sides signed six bilateral agreements and memorandums of understanding in the fields of trade exchange, education, housing, transport, industry and customs.

At a joint press conference, Arnous said the bilateral ties have witnessed considerable improvement lately, calling for further enhanced relations in the face of mutual challenges as well as regional and international developments.

"A complicated local, regional and international circumstances as well as the mutual challenges facing both countries, such as terrorism and unilateral economic sanctions ... require more coordination and cooperation" between Syria and Belarus, he said.

For his side, Golovchenko calls on the international and local communities to "stand by the Syrian side in its war against terrorism, overcome the sanctions and preserve the Syrian sovereignty."

Golovchenko, heading an economic delegation, arrived at Damascus on Wednesday for a two-day visit.
