DAR ES SALAAM, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania on Monday began marking the East African nation's 2nd national financial services week aimed at educating citizens on matters related to finances.

The week being marked in the country's northwestern region of Mwanza from Monday through Nov. 26 will provide room for Tanzanians to learn about opportunities provided by financial services toward economic empowerment.

Opening the 2nd national financial services week, Charles Mwamaja, the commissioner for Finance Development in the Ministry of Finance and Planning, said during the week people will get to know the financial policy, laws and opportunities provided by the financial sector.

During the week, Mwamaja said the government will collect views from citizens on how to improve the financial sector to make it more vibrant.

On Tuesday last week, Mwamaja said the government intended to make 80 percent of the population aware of financial matters by 2025 through the implementation of the financial education program.

He said more than 40 percent of citizens lack financial literacy despite the crucial role financial operations play in national development.
