DOHA, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Ferran Torres is one of seven FC Barcelona players representing Spain at the World Cup finals, but the 22-year-old could have extra pressure on him in Qatar for one reason: he is the son-in-law of Spain coach Luis Enrique.
Speaking to the press after Spain's Sunday training session, Torres insisted he and Enrique were able to distinguish between the personal and the professional.
"The coach and I know how to differentiate when we are family and when we are coach-players. We are doing very well," he said.
Torres insisted that with Enrique nobody could be assured of their place, "and that's what makes you always stay active," he insisted.
The forward has already made 31 appearances for his country, scoring 13 goals, which is an impressive rate for someone who doesn't view themselves as primarily a goal-scorer.
"I scored a lot of goals when I started, but I'm a winger. My job is to score goals and also to provide them for others and to get involved in defensive work. We are individuals, but we work together and it shows," added Torres.
He also highlighted how a young side appears to be developing after reaching the semifinals of the European Championship in the summer of 2021.
"We have been demonstrating for a long time that we are a team that can improve and the veterans give us that little bit that we youngsters lack. We really want to show what we can do and I think we're on the right track," he said, admitting that although the Spanish are "a great team with great projection. Maybe we are not among the favorites, but we are going to fight," insisted Torres. ■
