Jiangsu keeps clean record in Chinese women's volleyball league

BEIJING, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Jiangsu came back from one set down to beat Fujian 3-1 on Monday for its fourth win in a row in Group B of the 2022-23 Chinese Women's Volleyball Super League in Changzhou, east China's Jiangsu Province.

Coming into the match with three straight-set victories, Jiangsu dropped its first set this season 25-19, but levelled the score 25-20 with more powerful serves. After a 21-21 tie in the third set, Jiangsu scored three points in a row and won the set 25-22, before riding on the momentum to wrap up the match with another 25-22.

Outside hitter Wu Mengjie had 25 points for Jiangsu and Olympic champion Gong Xiangyu added 21. Captain Zheng Yixin scored 18 for Fujian.

The victory enabled Jiangsu to go atop Group B with 12 points ahead of the other unbeaten team Shanghai, who was one point short due to a 3-2 win over Fujian earlier.

Also on Monday, Henan saved two match points to edge Yunnan 26-24, 22-25, 25-14, 21-15, 18-16 for its second win this season. Han Wenya scored 21 points for Henan, while Yunnan captain Liu Mengya had an impressive 26 points.

Elsewhere, Hebei remained winless so far after losing 25-13, 25-20, 25-17 to Guangdong.

14 teams are divided into two groups to play in a round-robin format in the first phase of the 2022-23 season that includes three stops. Group A matches of the first stop scheduled to be played in Jiangmen, south China's Guangdong Province were postponed to December due to COVID-19 concerns.

Teams will be re-divided into Group C and D in the second stop, and Group E and F in the third, with top eight teams after three stops to advance into the second phase.
