TEHRAN, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- Iran's police have seized 580 "illegal" weapons in the northwestern province of West Azarbaijan over the past two months, semi-official Tasnim news agency reported on Thursday.

Of the confiscated arms, over 320 have been smuggled into the country to "cause insecurity and instigate riots," Tasnim quoted Police Commander of the West Azarbaijan Province Rahim Jahanbakhsh as saying at a press conference.

He said that the discovery of such large number of weapons in just two months is a proof of the enemy's determination to compromise Iran's security during the recent unrests.

Jahanbakhsh stressed that the enemy is afraid of a united and powerful Iran and, thus, aims to divide the country and sow ethnic rifts.

On Sunday, Tasnim reported that Iranian border guards had seized a batch of smuggled weapons and ammunition at the southeastern border in Sistan-Baluchestan Province.

The smuggled weapons, including 85 pistols and a number of magazines and bullets, "were concealed skillfully" in a pickup truck, Iran's Border Guards Commander Ahmad Ali Goudarzi was quoted as saying.
