RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Fluminense manager Fernando Diniz has called for striker German Cano to be included in Argentina's squad for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Cano, 34, has enjoyed one of the most prolific seasons of his 15-year professional career with 42 goals in 67 matches across all competitions for Fluminense in 2022.
"He could go to the World Cup because of the number of goals he scores and the way he applies himself," Diniz told reporters. "He is a very committed player. Maybe if he was playing in Argentina he would stand a better chance because he is having a brilliant season, off the charts."
Despite prolific spells with clubs in Argentina, Colombia, Mexico and Brazil, Cano has never represented his country at senior international level.
His chances of going to Qatar are considered remote and Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni did not include him in a preliminary 32-man squad, which must be cut to 26 by November 14.
Diniz said, "Cano is a proven scorer. Sometimes he stays away from the area to help the defense. But I tell him that this won't take away his chances of scoring goals. On the contrary, he will integrate more with his teammates when we create scoring chances.
"His performances have been getting better and better. He's a more complete player now."
Argentina will begin their World Cup campaign against Saudi Arabia on November 22 before meeting Mexico and Poland in their other group-stage matches. ■
