YAOUNDE, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Cameroon has successfully conducted the country's first coronary artery bypass surgery, according to Minister of Public Health Manaouda Malachie.
The surgery was performed at the Douala General Hospital in the commercial hub of Douala, Manaouda said in a tweet Wednesday night and added that it was a beating-heart surgery.
"This is also a sub-regional first (in) French-speaking Africa from Senegal to Congo. Congratulations to this all mixed team," Manaouda tweeted.
Coronary artery bypass grafting also known as heart bypass surgery is a procedure to restore blood flow to areas of the heart. It restores blood flow by using blood vessels from other parts of the body to create a detour around blockages. ■
