XI'AN, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese research team announced on Tuesday it has transplanted organs and tissue from a gene-edited pig to four monkeys, all of which have been surviving for about 10 days.
The xenotransplantation operation was conducted by researchers and clinicians at the Xijing Hospital affiliated to Air Force Medical University in Xi'an, China's Shaanxi Province on Oct. 16.
The team transplanted the pig's liver, heart, kidney and its cornea, skin and bone tissue to four monkeys.
The transplanted organs and tissue are now in good condition.
Human organ shortage is a worldwide problem. Scientists have long hoped that the issue could be resolved by using suitable animal organs for transplant, a concept called xenotransplantation.
The experiment indicates that transplants between different species can help solve the problem of human organ shortage.
