QALA-E-NAW, Afghanistan, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Three children have been confirmed dead due to a blast of unexploded ordnance (UXO) left over from the past wars in the western Badghis province on Friday, the provincial police said in a statement.

The blast took place at 8:00 a.m. local time Friday in the Nawabad area of Muqar district when some children were collecting garbage and found a toy-like device but it exploded, killing three on the spot.

A doctor in Qala-e-Naw hospital named Ajmal Atef has confirmed that three children ranging from eight to 12 years old had been killed in a blast Friday morning.

A similar blast killed a young boy in the neighboring Farah province a couple of days ago.

Afghanistan has been regarded as one of the most mine contaminated countries in the world as the blasts of UXOs claim dozens of lives every month in the country.
