BEIJING, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Here are the latest Chinese sports headlines over the past week:

1. China's women jump to second place in FIBA world rankings

A runners-up finish at the recent 2022 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup in Australia helped China vault into second place in the FIBA women's world rankings, world basketball's governing body announced on October 10.

China, who ranked seventh before the tournament, collected 676.5 points to jump to second place.

China lost only to the United States at the tournament to finish in the top three at a World Cup for the first time since 1994.


2. China qualify for U17 Asian Cup 2023

China have qualified for the U17 Asian Cup 2023 finals as one of the best six runners-up, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced on October 10.

China finished their qualifying campaign on October 9 with two consecutive wins and one defeat, scoring six points and claiming second place in qualifying Group G.

The finals are scheduled for May 2023, with a host nation yet to be confirmed after Bahrain withdrew from hosting the competition.


3. China suffer quarterfinal loss to Italy at women's volleyball world championship

China lost 25-16, 25-22, 13-25, 25-17 to Italy in the FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship quarterfinals here on October 11.

It was the second time that the two teams had faced each other at the tournament, as they met only three days beforehand in the group stage, where Italy took a straight-set win.

4. China beat Mexico in FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup

China defeated Mexico 2-1 in their first Group C match at the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup here on October 12.

China broke the deadlock in the opening minutes of the second half with a penalty, while substitute Yu Xingyue doubled the lead for the young "Steel Roses" in the 90th minute.

In the second round of group C, China will meet Colombia, while Mexico will face Spain on Saturday.


5. China move up in FIFA women's rankings

China have risen one spot to 15th in the latest FIFA women's rankings, despite not playing any matches in the past two months.

The rankings will be used to determine the seedings for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup draw, which will be held on October 22 in Auckland, New Zealand.
