MUMBAI, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- India's financial hub Mumbai has made it mandatory to wear seat belts for all car passengers including those in the rear seat from Nov. 1, according to an order issued by Mumbai traffic police Friday.

Earlier, only front seat passengers were required to wear seat belts, but the death of business tycoon Cyrus Mistry in a road accident last month has put a spotlight on the importance of wearing seat belts.

"Whoever drives a motor vehicle without wearing a safety belt or carries passengers not wearing seat belts shall be punishable," said the order by Mumbai traffic police.

India's Transport Ministry has reported that in 2020, India recorded 366,138 road accidents, killing 131,714 people and injuring 348,279 others.
