NEW DELHI, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- More than 20 people were killed and 20 others injured after a bus fell into a gorge in India's northern hilly state of Uttarakhand late Tuesday, local police said on Wednesday.
Twenty dead bodies have been recovered so far and the injured have been admitted to a hospital, the police said.
The ill-fated bus was carrying guests to a wedding when it fell into a 500-meter-deep gorge, the police said. About 45 people were on the bus when the accident occurred near the Dhumakot area of Pauri Garhwal district.
Rescue work continued through the night, though it was hampered due to darkness.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said it was a heart-rending accident.
"In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. I hope those who have been injured recover at the earliest. Rescue operations are underway. All possible assistance will be provided to those affected," the prime minister said on Twitter. ■
