MAPUTO, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Mozambique celebrated Tuesday Peace and Reconciliation Day, which marks the 30th anniversary of the signing of the General Peace Accords that ended 16 years of civil war in the country.

Leading the central ceremony with the laying of a wreath and an honor guard's march at the Heroes' Square in Maputo, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi appealed to all citizens to continue to fight for national peace.

Nyusi considered the 30 years as a long way of advances and setbacks for achieving lasting peace and said the great message for this day is that Mozambicans learn to live together and respect differences.

The head of state said the implementation of the disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) of former rebel movement Renamo's guerrillas has made remarkable progress, in which more than 4,000 out of the 5,221 registered soldiers have already been covered.

"We hope that by the end of this year we will be able to conclude the DDR process, which will mean a milestone in the implementation of the peace and national reconciliation agreement," he said.

In a message sent on the occasion, the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for Mozambique Mirko Manzoni, and the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Mozambique Myrta Kaulard, commended the government and Renamo for the continued use of dialogue to achieve sustainable peace and reconciliation.
