SHENZHEN, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Small insects have a big function. Black soldier flies are used to biodegrade kitchen waste to achieve a low-carbon life in Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province.
Xie Xiaohui, the Executive Vice Secretary-General of Vanke Foundation said "The kitchen waste is transformed by black soldier fly larvae, which can turn waste into things of value. Dameisha Vanke Center has formed a closed-loop operation of organic composting through the black soldier fly cabin. And also through the composting demonstration area, the community garden, and roof park, and also vision tank. The cyclic feeding of worms pre-treats the kitchen waste. And the black soldier fly larvae are connected to the kitchen waste treatment tank according to the fixed amount. The annual on-site treatment of kitchen waste can reach 73 tonnes, and the daily output of insect frass is 50 kg, which can be used as a nitrogen source for the processing of gardening. And 40 kg of black soldier fly larvae body are screened out, some of which are used for feeding the landscape fish in the park, and other frozen ones are collected and transported as feed for some kinds of pets."
The black soldier fly larvae, rich in protein, can be made into animal fodder and their feces can be processed into organic fertilizer.
