MACAO, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- Macao's external merchandise trade totaled 99.14 billion patacas (about 12 billion U.S. dollars) from January to August, down 9.8 percent from a year earlier, the special administrative region (SAR)'s statistical service said Thursday.
The latest report from Macao's Statistics and Census Service showed the total value of merchandise export in the first eight months of this year increased by 3.0 percent year on year to 9.13 billion patacas while total merchandise import dropped by 11.0 percent to 90.0 billion patacas.
In the first eight months, the value of re-exports and domestic exports went up by 2.0 percent and 9.3 percent to 7.75 billion patacas and 1.39 billion patacas respectively. Merchandise trade deficit totaled 80.87 billion patacas, down by 11.34 billion patacas from a year earlier, showed the report.
Analyzed by destination, merchandise export to the Chinese mainland decreased by 36.9 percent year on year to 866 million patacas in the first eight months. Exports to China's Hong Kong SAR, the United States and the European Union (EU) showed respective year-on-year growth of 13.5 percent, 4.0 percent and 6.8 percent.
Analyzed by place of origin, merchandise import from the EU and the Chinese mainland in the first eight months of 2022 decreased by 3.3 percent to 30.56 billion patacas, and by 18.9 percent to 27.08 billion patacas, respectively.
In August alone, total merchandise export amounted to 1.37 billion patacas, up 28.3 percent year on year, while total merchandise import went down by 4.4 percent year on year to 11.66 billion patacas.
