BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Wednesday marks the 2,573rd birthday of Confucius (551-479 B.C.), an ancient Chinese educator and philosopher. He founded Confucianism, a school of thought that profoundly influenced later generations. Here are some important thoughts of Confucianism.

A disciple once asked Confucius about "Ren," benevolence, a key idea in his thoughts. "To restrain yourself and practice propriety is benevolence," he replied.

When dealing with the relationship between gain and "Yi" or righteousness, Confucius proposed, "One should first consider and distinguish whether the obtainment of gain is in accord with morality."

"Li" or propriety, is the "basis for determining proper human relations, clarifying ambiguities, differentiating between things, and telling right from wrong," according to the Confucian classic "The Book of Rites."

Confucian philosopher Mencius advocates, "Good judgment of right and wrong creates wisdom." The Confucian school believes that people should have "Zhi" or wisdom, so as not to be confused by complexities and be able to act in conformity with ethical standards.

"Xin," fidelity, is explained in "The Analects of Confucius" as "What good is a man if he acts without good faith?" In Confucianism, one should be honest and truthful toward friends.
