BAGHDAD, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- At least five people were killed and some 30 wounded on Wednesday after Iranian forces carried out cross-border bombardments on Iranian Kurdish opposition parties' positions in the semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan in northern Iraq.
A statement by the regional Kurdish Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) said the Iranian attack targeted the headquarters of their Kurdish opposition parties in some refugee camps in the towns of Koya, Soran, and Barde in Erbil province.
The Iranian rockets and bobby-trapped drones killed and wounded many people, the CTS statement said, without giving further details.
A source from the regional health authority told Xinhua anonymously that five were killed and more than 30 wounded, some of the injured were women and children.
Kurdistan health authority said in a separate statement that ambulances and doctors were dispatched to the town of Koya to transfer the injured people to the regional hospitals, which were notified to receive them.
Meanwhile, a statement by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry strongly condemned "the Iranian side's artillery and rocket bombardment, which coincided with the use of 20 drones loaded with explosives, that targeted four areas in Iraq's Kurdistan region and resulted in many deaths and injuries."
Such "dangerous development threatens the security and sovereignty of Iraq," the statement said, adding these unilateral and provocative actions will only increase tension."
On the other side, the Iranian Mehr News Agency confirmed the bombardments, saying that Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps "has once again targeted the positions of terrorist groups operating near the country's western borders in Iraq's Kurdistan region."
Iranian and Turkish forces frequently attack the military bases of their Kurdish opposition parties in Kurdistan in northern and northeastern Iraq, accusing them of carrying out attacks against their home countries from the Iraqi Kurdish region. ■
