KUNMING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- A new power-generating unit of Baihetan hydropower station in southwest China passed a 72-hour trial operation and started commercial operation recently.
The operation of the No. 8 unit marks that all power-generating units on the left bank of the station are now in commercial operation.
The Baihetan hydropower station is located on the Jinsha River, the upper section of the Yangtze River. It straddles the provinces of Yunnan and Sichuan.
The hydropower station is equipped with 16 hydro-generating units, each with a capacity of 1 million kilowatts, the largest single-unit capacity in the world.
All units are due to be operational by the end of the year. Baihetan will then be the world's second-largest hydropower station in terms of total installed capacity.
