TOKYO, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Tottenham striker Son Heung-min helped South Korea past Cameroon 1-0 with a first-half header in their World Cup warmup match in Seoul on Tuesday.

Son, who had scored a free kick last Friday to earn a 2-2 draw with Costa Rica, headed in a rebound in the 35th minute after Kim Jin-su's shot was deflected by goalkeeper Andre Onana.

The African side should have leveled the score in the 43rd minute but Bryan Mbeumo's effort rebounded off defender Kwon Kyung-won and then hit the crossbar.

In Dusseldorf, Germany, goalkeeper Daniel Schmidt became man of the match after saving Japan from a defeat to fellow World Cup qualifier Ecuador.

Schmidt, who plays with Belgian side Sint-Truiden, blocked Enner Valencia's shot from the spot in the 83rd minute. Ecuador was awarded the penalty kick after Shogo Taniguchi made a clumsy challenge at the edge of the box.

South Korea is in Group H at the World Cup with Uruguay, Ghana and Portugal, while Japan has been drawn in Group E with Germany, Spain and Costa Rica.
