BERLIN, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Spain defeated France 88-76 here on Sunday in the FIBA EuroBasket 2022 Final for the country's fourth title, while Germany knocked down Poland 82-69 to take the bronze.
Spain nearly wasted a 21-point lead but the Hernangomez brothers Juancho and Willy combined to score 41 points to lead Spain to take the third-most European crowns, behind only Soviet Union (14) and Yugoslavia (8).
Juancho Hernangomez hit 7 out of 9 three-pointers in scoring 27 points to go along with 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Spain drained 15 three-pointers while France only made nine.
Willy Hernangomez collected the FIBA EuroBasket 2022 MVP award as he contributed 14 points and 8 rebounds in the final with tournament averages of 17.2 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. He reached double figures in scoring in each of the nine games with a personal best of 27 points recorded in the quarterfinals.
Hosts Germany won the third place game 82-69 over Poland for their first bronze medal after the title in 1993 and second place in 2005.
Poland had nine turnovers in the first half, whilst shooting 0 out of 10 from three-point range. Johannes Voigtmann finished with 14 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks in an all-round display. Dennis Schroder hit two big threes in the fourth quarter also to contribute a game-high 26 points along with 6 assists.
Willy Hernangomez, Lorenzo Brown, French center Rudy Gobert, German captain Dennis Schroder, and Giannis Antetokounmpo, were announced in the tournament's All-Star Five lineup. ■
