TEHRAN, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Iran and Uzbekistan on Wednesday signed 17 cooperation documents in a wide range of areas, the official IRNA news agency reported.

The documents, which encompass transportation development, cultural exchanges, customs, trade and economic cooperation, health, and other fields, were signed in Samarkand of Uzbekistan in the presence of presidents of both countries.

At a joint commission meeting, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said Tehran-Tashkent ties are beyond merely neighborly and regional links and are rooted in deep civilized and cultural relations.

"Considering the capacities that exist in the Islamic Republic of Iran, we are ready to have good cooperation in the field of energy," said Raisi.

He also underlined Iran's progress despite U.S. sanctions, saying that Iran has turned threats into opportunities.

For his part, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev said the economic exchanges between the two countries have witnessed progress.
