There was much excitement about this year's kite festival at Australia's Bondi Beach, after events were held online during COVID-19 lockdowns.

SYDNEY, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- The skies above Bondi Beach were once again filled with hundreds of kites of all shapes and sizes, as Australia's most famous strip of surf and sand hosted the annual Festival of the Winds on Sunday.

The colorful event, which was originally founded in 1978 to help raise awareness of wind energy, has since evolved into one of the biggest festivals of its kind in the world, drawing in people of all ages including many from overseas.

Festival goers had the chance to make their own kites at beachside workshops, while children could get their faces painted or enjoy the variety of performers who all added to the vibrant celebration.

Mayor of Waverley Paula Masselos said there was much excitement about this year's festival after events were held online during COVID-19 lockdowns.

She said the professional kite flying displays on the beach by members of the Australian Kite Flyers Society is always spectacular, and there would be lots of activities to enjoy throughout Bondi Park.

"We encourage families to bring a kite, bring your camera and enjoy a wonderful day out at the beach. You can also catch a glimpse of our newly restored Bondi Pavilion which is reopening to the community at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday Sept. 22."
