JERUSALEM, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- A Palestinian youth was caught by Israeli police in southern Tel Aviv on Thursday over carrying explosive devices and automatic weapons.

The suspect, a 19-year-old boy from the West Bank city of Nablus, was arrested at the Clock Tower in Jaffa in southern Tel Aviv after "he aroused the suspicion of the special police patrol unit's officers," the police said in a statement.

He was taken for interrogation in the Shin Bet internal security agency after two pipe bombs and an improvised Carlo submachine gun were found in his bag, said the police.

In initial questioning, he told the police that he intended to carry out a mass attack in central Tel Aviv.

The Hebrew-language Ha'aretz newspaper reported that in April, the suspect was arrested in the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East Jerusalem and was sentenced to four months in prison after a knife was found in his possession.

Earlier on Thursday, an Israeli shot dead a 17-year-old Palestinian after the latter attacked him with a hammer, lightly injuring him in the face, near the West Bank city of Ramallah.
