TIANJIN, Sept. 7 (Xinhua)--In Dongbaizhuang Village of north China's Tianjin, a giant hybrid rice variety is in the final grain-filling stage. The experimental rice variety was sown on 100 mu (6.67 hectares) of pilot rice paddies in late May and is expected to ripe in October.
No giant hybrid rice varieties have been grown in North China before, though planting of similar varieties has been successful in many cities of southern China.
The giant hybrid rice can grow between 1.8 to 2.2 meters tall. Compared to regular hybrid rice, it has higher yields, drought tolerance, and better resistance to disease and waterlogging.
