JERUSALEM, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Israel has recalled the head of its liaison office in Morocco over allegations of sexual harassment and financial irregularities, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.

David Govrin was called back after a probe was launched into the allegations against him a few weeks ago, the ministry said in a statement.

Govrin is suspected of being involved in a sexual harassment scandal and of failing to disclose an expensive gift he received from Morocco's royal family, Israel's state-owned Kan TV news reported.

The ministry is also investigating a dispute between the envoy and a security officer at the Israeli liaison office in Rabat, said the report.

Govrin, who served as Israel's ambassador to Egypt from 2016 to 2020, was appointed as head of Israel's liaison office in Rabat in 2021 after the two countries normalized ties under a U.S.-brokered peace deal in December 2020.
