NEW DELHI, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- India's daily COVID-19 caseload on Monday decreased to 5,910 mark, officials said.

According to the federal health ministry data released on Monday morning, 5,910 new cases of COVID-19 were reported during the past 24 hours, taking the total tally to 44,462,445 in the country. The cases reported on Monday mark a decrease in comparison to the daily caseload of Sunday 6,809.

With the reporting of fresh cases, India's active caseload currently stands at 53,974.

The country also logged 16 related deaths during the past 24 hours, pushing the overall death toll to 528,007 since the beginning of the pandemic, the ministry said.

With the increase in cases, the daily positivity rate stands at 2.60 percent and the weekly positivity rate was recorded 2.15 percent, the ministry data showed.

The ministry said so far 43,880,464 people have been successfully cured and discharged from hospitals, of whom 7,034 were discharged during the past 24 hours.

According to the health ministry, the cumulative COVID-19 vaccination coverage in the country has exceeded 2 billion doses and until Monday morning 2,135,274,945 doses were administered.

So far over 887 million COVID-19 tests have been conducted across the country.

A cumulative total of 887,379,274 samples had been tested up to Sept. 4, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said on Monday. Out of these 227,313 tests were conducted on Sunday alone.

Last week Dr N K Arora, a member of the government's COVID-19 task force said that COVID-19 was still around and quite a significant transmission of viruses was going on.

At present the Indian government is focussing on improving booster dose coverage as the uptake for the third dose has been low. The aim is to boost the immunity of the people in the wake of the detection of new variants.

Health experts say COVID-19 is a cyclical disease and will come in waves.
