PRETORIA, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- A total of 33 police officers were killed in the line of their duties between April 1, 2021 and March 31, 2022, said South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday.
Ramaphosa made the remarks during the South African Police Service Commemoration Day ceremony 2022 in Pretoria. He condemned the killing of police officers and urged the community to help law enforcement agents to bring criminals to book.
"It (this day) should also serve to mobilize society against the killing of our officers. No society can remain silent when criminals have clearly declared war on the police. Our men and women in blue represent the authority of the state and any attack on them is a direct attack on the state and an attack on the people. I call upon all our police members to remain vigilant at all times," said Ramaphosa.
The president on Sunday laid the wreath to honor the police officers who passed on. He also conveyed condolences to the families of the police officers who died in their line of duty. ■
