BEIJING, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- Here are the latest Chinese sports headlines over the past week:

1. Zheng Siwei/Huang Yaqiong win third world title

Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong of China won their third mixed doubles world title by beating two-time runners-up Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino of Japan 21-13, 21-16 on Sunday.

Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan also landed their third gold medal in the women's doubles event at the world championships. Olympic women's singles champion Chen Yufei fell to top seed Akane Yamaguchi in the final to take a silver medal.

However, in the following Japan Open, Zheng/Huang saw their 38-game winning streak ended by Watanabe/Higashino in the semifinals, where Chen Qingchen/Jia Yifan and Chen Yufei also crashed out.

2. Chinese players achieve breakthroughs at US Open

The ongoing US Open has seen Chinese players making multiple breakthroughs in singles event. Wu Yibing recorded the best result for a Chinese male player at a Grand Slam after reaching last 32 and won experience and confidence despite a round 3 defeat to defending champion Daniil Medvedev.

In the women's event, for the first time in history, China has four players in the last 32 after Wang Xiyu, Zheng Qinwen, Yuan Yue and Zhang Shuai, who made a step further first into the fourth round on Friday, all achieved their best GS results.

3. China loses to Japan in final of AVC Cup for Women

China ended its quest for the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Cup for Women as runner-up after losing to Japan 25-23, 25-21, 19-25, 25-16 in the final in Pasig City, the Philippines.

Kuang Qi, coach of the young second-string Chinese team, praised his players for their fighting spirit and admitted they still need to work on their capabilities to seize key points when it matters.

4. China beats Bahrain in FIBA World Cup Asian qualifiers

With 22 points from star center Zhou Qi, China wrapped up their window 4 matches of the FIBA World Cup Asian qualifiers with an 80-67 victory over Bahrain in Nur-Sultan on Monday.

Having won the other window 4 match over host Kazahkstan in the previous week, China now sits second in Group F with a 6-2 record.

5. China eliminated from FIVB men's worlds after three straight defeats

The Chinese men's volleyball team bowed out of the FIVB World Championship after losing all of their three group matches against Türkiye, Canada and Italy.

Despite the disappointing worlds journey, China managed to secure a place in the Paris 2024 qualifiers with a 25th place ranking.
