LUSAKA, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- A senior Zambian government official said on Friday that talks with neighboring Angola on the possibility of owning a stake in that country's oil refinery have reached an advanced stage.

Peter Kapala, the Minister of Energy, said the two governments have continued engagement on various details regarding Zambia's stake in Angola's Lobito Oil Refinery.

"We continue to engage, through my ministry, in discussions towards actualizing this development," he said in a statement.

The move, he added, was part of Zambia's strategy to ensure consistent access to the supply of petroleum on a preferential basis, adding that the two governments announce the direction the refinery project will take once discussions are concluded.

Zambia is seeking a stake in Angola's refinery project which has a capacity to produce 200,000 barrels of oil per day.
