SEOUL, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's online shopping grew in July, statistical office data showed Thursday.

Shopping in the cyberspace stood at 17 trillion won (12.6 billion U.S. dollars) in July, up 8.8 percent from the same month of last year, according to Statistics Korea.

The government lifted all anti-virus measures, except an indoor mask mandate, in April, contributing to an increased outside activity and an improved consumer spending.

Online transactions for travel and transport services more than doubled to 1.76 trillion won (1.3 billion dollars) in July, marking the highest since relevant data began to be compiled in 2017.

Transactions for culture and leisure services spiked 201.8 percent from a year earlier to 266.5 billion won (197 million dollars) in July, keeping a triple-digit increase since April.

Demand for food delivery services in the cyberspace declined 5.4 percent to 2.25 trillion won (1.7 billion dollars) amid the eased social-distancing rules.

Mobile shopping through smartphones gained 12.7 percent over the year to 12.9 trillion won (9.5 billion dollars) in July, taking up 75.8 percent of the total online shopping.
