NEW YORK, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese teenager Zheng Qinwen edged out the 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia in three sets to reach the women's singles second round at the U.S. Open here on Tuesday.
Zheng, 19, won the opening set 6-3, but the 16th seed Ostapenko made it a parity by taking the second set 6-3.
World No. 39 Zheng was broken first in the deciding set, but managed to come back soon and closed out 6-4 to secure a berth in the second round. Zheng finished an astonishing 21 aces in the two-hour duel.
Zheng aroused a stir at this year's French Open as she stunned two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep of Romania and French veteran Alize Cornet en route to the last 16. ■
