STOCKHOLM, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- A fire that broke out on a passenger ferry carrying around 300 people off the coast of Sweden on Monday has been put under control, according to the Swedish Maritime Administration.
The ferry was en route from Nynashamn, a city south of Stockholm, to the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea when the fire alarm went off at around 12:40 p.m. local time, Swedish Television reported.
"We have received reports that the fire is under control, but we have alerted boats and helicopters, and would cooperate with the Sea Rescue Society, the Coast Guard and merchant shipping should we need to evacuate. As it looks now, we don't need it," said Lisa Mjorning, Communications Manager of the maritime authority.
"We have been informed of a fire on a limited scale, [and] firefighting is currently underway. We are currently compiling more information, but have no reports of personal injuries," Stefan Elfstrom, a manager of shipping company Stena Line, told Swedish Television. ■
