DAMASCUS, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Syrian government has installed 16 desalination plants to overcome a major water outage in the northeastern Hasakah province caused by Turkish forces, state news agency SANA reported Thursday.

The Turkish forces halted 25 days ago the water pumping from the Alouk water station, the main source of water supply in Hasakah, the report said, adding that the move affects the lives of 1 million people in the region.

The water authorities in Hasakah are now extracting water from wells, and processing it via the desalination plants before distributiion to local residents via water tankers with the help of humanitarian organizations and local associations, reported SANA.

The Turkish forces have repeatedly cut off water pumping from Alouk in a bid to exert pressure on the Kurdish militias in Hasakah.
