VIENTIANE, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- The weather bureau of Laos has warned people across the country to be alert to the possibility of landslides, flooding, strong winds and rain from tropical storm MA-ON.

According to a report issued on Thursday by the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology under the Lao Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, tropical storm MA-ON will bring heavy rain and strong winds to several provinces of Laos.

The storm will pass through north of Vietnam from Wednesday to Saturday, then move across Laos, causing moderate to heavy rainfall across the country.

From Wednesday to Thursday, the southern provinces will see thunderstorms and torrential rain with gusting winds.

From Thursday to Saturday, thunderstorms and torrential rain with gusting winds can be expected in northern Laos.

Meanwhile, thunderstorms and torrential rain with gusting winds are expected in the central provinces, including Lao capital Vientiane from Wednesday to Saturday.

The department has advised provincial authorities to inform local residents to be alert to the possibility of landslides and flooding, and prepare to move their valuables and animals to a safe place if necessary.

The heavy rainfall in Laos earlier this month caused floods that damaged houses and infrastructure and inundated hundreds of hectares of farmland in numerous provinces and Vientiane.
