COLOMBO, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's University Grants Commission (UGC) on Tuesday announced that all the universities in the country will be reopened in September.
The decision was made on Monday night during a meeting between UGC officials and vice-chancellors of universities, UGC Chairman Sampath Amaratunga said.
Amaratunga said the universities were closed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and classes were being conducted online.
"The time has come to start lectures in person and to start extra-curricular activities. Students have been demanding to commence physical lectures," he said.
Amaratunga said almost all students have received two doses of COVID-19 vaccines, and vice-chancellors of universities also agreed that academic and extra-curricular activities can be held as prior to the pandemic.
Students who are unable to attend lectures can continue to learn online, Amaratunga said. ■
