LOS ANGELES, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- Japanese anime film "Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero" topped the North American box office with an estimated 20.1 million U.S. dollars in ticket sales on its opening weekend, showed figures from measurement firm Comscore on Sunday.
A sequel to 2018's "Dragon Ball Super: Broly," the Toei Animation production is being released at more than 3,100 North American locations.
Directed by Tetsuro Kodama, it is the 21st Dragon Ball film and the second film in the Dragon Ball Super franchise.
"Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero" holds an approval rating of 92 percent based on 36 reviews to date on review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes.
Another newcomer, Universal Pictures' thriller "Beast" opened in the second place this weekend with 11.57 million dollars. Idris Elba stars in the film about a father and his two teenage daughters who find themselves hunted by a massive rogue lion intent on proving that the savannah has but one apex predator.
Rounding out the top three, Sony Pictures' action comedy film "Bullet Train" took in 8 million dollars on its third weekend, pushing its North American total to 68.98 million dollars. ■
