RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- Raphael Veiga struck a superb second-half goal to earn leader Palmeiras a 1-1 home draw with Flamengo in Brazil's Serie A championship on Sunday.
Victor Hugo handed the visitors the lead by heading home following an Ayrton Lucas cross on the half-hour mark.
Veiga put his side on level terms just after the hour by receiving a pass from Dudu on the edge of the penalty area and taking a touch before rifling an unstoppable left-footed shot into the bottom left corner.
The result, which ends a seven-game unbeaten run in the league for Palmeiras, leaves the Sao Paulo outfit with 49 points from 23 matches, eight points ahead of second-placed Fluminense. Flamengo is third in the 20-team standings, a point further back.
Meanwhile, Lucas Braga struck in the 33rd-minute to give Santos a 1-0 home win over Sao Paulo. Santos is now eighth in the standings with 33 points, four points ahead of 12th-placed Sao Paulo.
In other Brazilian Serie A fixtures on Sunday, Ceara drew 1-1 at Bragantino, Fortaleza secured a 1-0 home victory over Corinthians, Cuiaba drew 1-1 at Atletico Goianiense, Athletico Paranaense was held to a 1-1 home draw by America Mineiro and Botafogo drew 2-2 at Juventude. ■
